It is a well-known fact that cars are a depreciating asset, that lose a big chunk of value when they are driven off the showroom floor and in the first year of their life. While this depreciation does slow over time, cars continue to decrease in value as every year passes.

One of the main reasons for this is due to the way that the motor industry valuates pre-owned cars, with the two biggest factors being age and mileage. This means that traditionally a variety of factors, such as actual condition, maintenance, how a car was used and accessories, had no bearing on the cars value. Simply put, if it is five years old it is worth the same as every other five-year-old example on the market.

That very basic pricing algorithm doesn't take into account condition or how a car was cared for, which very often sees those buyers who cared for their cars diligently lose out when it does come time to sell or trade in their well-looked after car.

Why does condition matter?

For example, cars that have done a lot of dirt road driving will be in a much worse condition than cars that spent their entire life on the tar. Similarly, while service history is easy to track, larger maintenance items are not always recorded and should also be taken into account when calculating the resale value of a car.

Good drivers will be more meticulous about servicing, maintenance and general care like checking the oil, water and tyres and will more regularly clean their car. Cars owned by good drivers will in all likelihood have less dings, scrapes and parking lot scars. This is damage that is not always claimed for, but which can have a big effect on the overall condition of a car.

The result is that when the drivers on the good end of the scale decide to sell, their vehicles are generally in a better condition and that should be rewarded with a better resale value.

Accurately valuate cars with the Vitality Car Rating

The Vitality Car Rating aims to do just that as it is able to accurately measure a vehicles condition thanks to data gathered from underwriting as well as accident and repair claims and driving behaviour data accessed through Vitality Drive’s advanced telematics, which measure how and where a vehicle was driven. Discovery Insure’s data showcases that good drivers are less likely to claim for vehicle breakdowns than poor drivers and the insurer believes this is because good drivers also tend to look after their cars better.

This data is then translated into a simple, yet accurate, vehicle rating that measures the true condition of the vehicle. When it comes time to sell, Discovery clients who have been on Vitality Drive for at least one year with a telematics device installed, can request their Vitality Car Rating and corresponding resale value boost.

Owners can then visit an accredited partner dealership in the Discovery Insure network, which includes any of the more than 300 dealers and brands in the Motus network, to sell their car at the boosted resale value. This boosted value could be as much as 15% more than the normal resale value of a car of the same age and mileage.
