July marks the birth of the iconic Fiat 500. This truly Italian masterpiece was a catalyst for motorisation in Europe in the 1950s and has embodied pure Italian genius and the essence of La Dolce Vita for the past 68 years.
The original Fiat 500 was designed by Dante Giacosa to be a compact, affordable vehicle for the masses and swiftly became a cornerstone of Italy’s post-war economic recovery. The design quickly gained recognition and today, even without a logo, name, flag or any other identifying feature, the Fiat 500 remains instantly recognisable.
Since its debut, more than 7.5 million Fiat 500s have been sold worldwide, solidifying its status as an iconic vehicle that is etched into the collective imagination of generations of drivers from diverse ages, tastes and nationalities.
The secret to this model’s global success lies in its continuous evolution while remaining true to its core identity.
The modern Fiat 500 is one of the best reinterpretations of an automotive icon yet as it embodies the same elements that made the original such a success. In South Africa it is the only model to currently be offered under the Fiat brand.
The third generation of an icon
The current model, which was introduced in 2020, is the third iteration of the Fiat 500 and continues to revolutionise urban mobility with its blend of charm, innovation and advanced technology.
In 2024 the Fiat 500 range was updated with additional specification to make it more fashionable, efficient and stylish as well as safer.
The Fiat 500 is powered by a 1.2-litre engine that develops 51kW at 5 500rpm and 102Nm at 3 000rpm. Contributing to low total cost of ownership is the fact that the Fiat 500 uses just 4,8 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.
Inside, the seven-inch Uconnect HD touchscreen with tablet effect and HD display includes a wide range of functions along with hands free capability, Bluetooth technology and voice recognition, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The Fiat 500 may be playful and stylish, but when it comes to safety nothing is left to chance thanks to seven airbags and features such as electronic stability control.
