Chery has unveiled their first double-cab bakkie as the brand looks to enter into one of the most competitive global vehicle segments and ruffle some feathers in South Africa.
The exact model name is yet to be revealed but for now the bakkie is known as the KP31 and it is expected to reach markets globally towards the end of 2026 or early in 2027. Chery South Africa has confirmed that the new bakkie will make its way to our roads during that same time period.
Modern powertrains
Chery has also revealed that the KP31 will debut with a diesel plug-in hybrid system which pairs a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine with electric drive technology. The system has been engineered to deliver strong torque, improved efficiency as well as reduced noise and vibration characteristics. This powertrain will be joined by a similar petrol-powered plug-in hybrid derivative at a later stage.

During the final development phase ahead of the vehicles launch, engineers will target a payload of 1 000kg and a braked towing capacity of up to 3 500kg, ensuring that the KP31 is ready to carry the heaviest loads. The rear load bin has also been designed to make maximum use of the available space with minimal wheel arch intrusion and support for chassis cab applications.
Off-road ready
Chery has also confirmed that their KP31 will be ready for the toughest off-road terrain thanks to an extensive list of 4x4 equipment that will include front, centre and rear diff-locks as well as a low-range transmission in addition to dedicated off-road driving modes. An innovative tight turn assist function has been designed to enhance manoeuvrability in demanding terrain.
Further standard features will include underbody protection, integrated recovery points and a raised air intake, ensuring that the Chery KP31 is ready for any work or leisure tasks, both on and off the road.
Local availability
The production ready version of Chery’s KP31 double-cab bakkie is expected to be unveiled later this year. The exact South African launch date and local specification will be confirmed closer to that local introduction date.
